Also state why you are qualified to write it. Please keep your query letter to one page in length. Include contact information and samples of your previously published clips if possible. Keep in mind (especially for holiday issues) that Cats has a six-month lead time. Occasionally, we accept completed articles on "spec." Please purchase a news stand copy of the magazine to see the type of material we run. Do not request a review copy. We are open for submissions in any area. Do not submit queries via email.

DON'T:
* Change a story's focus without approving it with CATS first.
* Submit any article containinq facts or techniques of which you are unsure.
* Copy material directly from any other source.

* Hesitate to give CATS feedback. A better product is always our goal!

SAMPLE QUERY
(A winning query need not be long!)

Traveling With Your Cat
Many people would like to travel with their cats, but don t know how to prepare for the trip. I propose an article that would give:
I. Tips for traveling via different modes of transportation, i.e car, plane, train, bus and ship.
II. The best type of cat carrier.
III. When, or if, to stop feeding and watering before the trip.
IV. Information on how to call ahead to the destination to make accommodations for the cat.
V. How to find out if there are entry regulations in a foreign country.
VI: Sidebar idea. Funny anecdote on a traveling cat.

Photos ideas:
* A cat and map or plane tickets
* A cat peeking out of a carrier
* A cat sitting on a suitcase

SAMPLE QUERY
Toxoplasmosis
Because toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease that humans can catch as well as cats, readers should know what this animal disease is all about. Therefore, I propose an article that would cover the following:
I. What the disease is and how it spreads.
II. How it affects cats.
III. How it affects humans and especially unborn children.
IV. How the cat can be cured.
V. What steps humans should take if they are infected with the disease.
Illustration idea:
* Because many times there is no sign of illness in the animal we might try to illustrate the life cycle of the parasite and depict how the disease is spread.

Writing for Cat Fancy

Thank you for your interest in Cat Fancy, a consumer magazine directed to the general cat-owning population and dedicated to improving the lives of cats worldwide. We have listed below some of the publication requirements of our magazine.

Before you get started, we suggest that you read past issues of the magazine to acquaint yourself with the type of material we use. Past issues are available at many public libraries, or you may order a sample issue by sending $5.50 to the address on the back.

Unsolicited Manuscripts
Cat Fancy does not read or accept unsolicited manuscripts; however, the editors are happy to consider article queries. Unsolicited manuscripts sent with a self-addressed, stamped envelope are returned unread. Those without an SASE are discarded. Please query if you have an article idea in mind.

Feature Articles
While 90 percent of the feature articles that appear in Cat Fancy are assigned to writers we work with regularly, we do occasionally accept a feature or feature sidebar from a new contributor.

Each month, we try to provide our readers a mix of informative articles dealing with feline health, nutrition, grooming, behavior and training, as well as a fun feature or two on cat-related events, hobbies, etc. Breed profiles, run nearly every month, are usually assigned to a breeder or cat show judge. Occasionally, we run exceptional pieces of fiction or photo essays. We rarely use stories in which the cat speaks as if it were human.

While we assign most medical and behavior pieces to certified experts in the particular field, we will consider well-researched pieces by freelancers it experts are consulted. While there is no substitute for good writing, experts add credibility.

Department Articles
With few exceptions, our departments are written by regular columnists or by the editors. We occasionally accept articles of less than 1,000 words for our Cat Newsline column. Such articles should cover news items of national interest to cat lovers. Possible subjects include new legislation affecting cat owners, medical breakthroughs and trends in cat care.

We also use short stories, how-to pieces, word puzzles, quizzes and craft projects in our Kids for Cats column, a section aimed at our readers between 10 and 16 years old. Good-quality photographs are essential to craft projects.

The Feline Friends department is a column written by readers about their special cats. We accept Feline Friends submissions for consideration only once or twice a year. Check the end of the Feline Friends column in a current issue of the magazine for an announcement of when we will be accepting manuscripts again and for submission specifications. If no announcement appears, we are not currently accepting submissions.

Poetry
Poetry is the one exception to our query-first policy. The editors are happy to consider short, cat-related poems, which are used primarily as filler in the back of the magazine. We put no limit on the number of poems you may submit, but be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope large enough for their return.

In general, we're looking for straightforward poems that capture the essence of the cat or of what owning a cat means to our readers. We rarely go for esoteric poems with deep hidden meanings. To get a feel for our readers, read back issues of the magazine.

The Query
Following are a few points to consider when querying:
--When possible, limit your query to one typewritten page.
--We will be judging your writing ability on your query letter – put as much effort into your letter as you plan to put into your manuscript.
--Research, research, research. Before sending a query, know the subject and be sure your letter reflects this knowledge. If you wish to write on a medical or behavioral subject in which you are not a certified expert, plan to interview an expert or two for your story. Include that information in your query.
--Read back issues to find out whether we’ve recently covered your planned topic and to familiarize yourself with our style and readership.
--If available, include one or two previously published writing samples.
--Excellent-quality color photographs are essential to considering stories on regional events or cat-related attractions.
--Please be patient. We'll make every effort to respond to your query within eight weeks. Occasionally, however, this simply isn’t possible.
--We do not consider fax, telephone or e-mail queries.

Submission Specifications
We only assign articles to writers with whom we work regularly; all others will be asked to submit work on speculation. After assignment or a go-ahead to send an article on speculation, your manuscript should be typewritten and double-spaced. Send both a hard copy and an electronic file in ASCII or text-only format on a 3.5inch disk.

We prefer that articles be accompanied by appropriate art in the form of professional-quality transparencies or professional illustrations. We rarely use black-and-white photos. For more information, send for our photo guidelines, photo needs list and/or artist's guidelines.

With every submission, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope large enough to accommodate return of your materials.

Payment
CAT FANCY pays on publication. Article fees are based on the quality of the article and the experience of the author. We pay more for manuscripts accompanied by good-quality photographs.

You can expect payment to arrive in the latter part of the cover month in which the article appears (for example, if your piece appears in the November issue, your check should arrive in the latter part of November). We buy first North American Serial Rights on an exclusive basis; the nonexclusive right to use the article and/or artwork in electronic media; and the nonexclusive right to use the article and/or artwork as well as your name, image and biographical data in advertising and promotion.

Responsibility
We cannot assume responsibility for materials you submit, but we assure you that we will take all reasonable care in handling your work.

Miscellaneous
--Inquiries should be in writing. While it may seem quicker to call, interruptions throughout the day will lead to a longer turnaround time for manuscripts and queries in the long run.
--Additional guidelines are available for artists and photographers. Send an SASE with your request.
--You must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with every query or submission. We cannot respond to or acknowledge any correspondence or submission that does not include an SASE.

Mailing Address
All correspondence with the editorial offices should be addressed to: Cat Fancy, Editorial Office, P.O. Box 6050, Mission Viejo, CA 92690

If you’ve been assigned an article and must send it via an express delivery service to meet your deadline, call our offices at (714) 855-8822 to get the street address. Please do not fax materials unless requested to do so by the editors.

Writer Guidelines
Please read Good Dog! and CATsumer Report and analyze our style. Note our distinctive voice. Please try to write in this style: informative, talkative, friendly, expert, fun.

Write in third person, unless first person is more appropriate, as with a humor or opinion piece.

Every article needs a beginning, a middle and an end. The thoughts must flow in a logical sequence, carrying the reader through from the beginning to the end.

Each paragraph must have a topic sentence which states the main thought of the paragraph. Other sentences should support the topic sentence.

Your writing must be interesting and tightly written, with your personality showing through. If you write about a dog or cat, let the dog’s or cat’s personality come through, too.

Use anecdotes and occasional quotes to liven things up. Storytelling techniques will humanize your piece. Always keep in mind that we look for a conversational style.

Use contractions: "I wouldn’t" as opposed to "I would not."

Back up your statements with quotes from an expert to give your story credibility.

We reserve the right to edit or rewrite your work.

We do not accept material "written" by the dog or cat.

We do not accept fiction or poetry.

We cannot run stories that have been printed (or will be printed) in Dog World, Dog Fancy, Dog & Kennel, the AKC Gazette, Cats, Cat Fancy, or I Love Cats. We will reprint articles from breed and obedience club newsletters and from regional dog or cat publications or other regional publications with written permission of the author and of the publication.

We prefer to receive articles via e-mail – as a message, not as an attachment.

Alternatively, we accept submissions on Macintosh or IBM (ASCII) 3.5" disks in Microsoft Word. Please provide hard copy along with the disk.

We can also accept articles sent via Modem. Call for details.

Submissions may also be typed or computer printed. Please type your name, address, daytime and night-time phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address on your manuscript and print name, address and phone numbers on any photos, slides and transparencies that you send or that we request.

Good Dog! and CATsumer Report are not responsible for unsolicited photographs, slides, transparencies and manuscripts. We cannot guarantee that these materials will be returned.
Currently, our budget only allows us to pay a minimal amount for articles, plus a one-year subscription to the publication. We will discuss fees if we decide to publish one of your articles.

If you don’t hear from us within a reasonable time, or you have questions, give us a call or email us. We are phone- and e-mail-friendly.

We appreciate your interest in Good Dog! and CATsumer Report.

Thank you,

Writing for Dog Fancy magazine

Thank you for your interest in DOG FANCY magazine. The following editorial requirements and suggestions will help you in preparing your submissions.

DOG FANCY'S FOCUS
DOG FANCY is devoted to the care and enjoyment of dogs of all kinds, purebreds and mixed breeds. It is written for an adult audience of pet owners. We publish a variety of articles on such subjects as training, health, behavior, activities and general care. We do not publish fiction or articles in which the dog speaks as if it were human, and we do not publish poetry. Stories must present a responsible viewpoint; we do not publish articles that glorify breeding for fun and profit or that take a light, humorous view of irresponsible dog care. Breed profiles are assigned to experts in the breed or to experienced writers who are familiar with our breed profile requirements. We are primarily interested in breeds that are common in the United States, but high-quality articles on foreign breeds will be considered. Most medical articles are assigned to veterinarians.

The ideal manuscript is a 850- to 1,500-word article accompanied by high-quality color slides or professional illustrations. DOG FANCY follows Associated Press (AP) editorial style. We especially encourage well-written, thoroughly researched articles in the following areas: health, nutrition, care (general tips and how-to articles), grooming and training. Humor, if well done, is also acceptable. Tributes to dogs that have died or to beloved family pets are discouraged as we have an abundance of this type of material.

SUBMITTING QUERIES
DOG FANCY does not accept unsolicited manuscripts; we work from a query basis only. Please send a query detailing the story or article idea. Please do not call with queries; we can’t judge writing ability over the phone. Due to the volume of queries we receive, a response may take eight to 10 weeks. Multiple queries will not be considered. We cannot respond to queries that are not accompanied by self-addressed, stamped envelopes. If we request to view your manuscript on speculation, please submit it on disk (Microsoft Word, text only) along with a clean hard copy. For authors without personal computer word processing capabilities, high-quality typewritten pages (suitable for scanning) are acceptable. We cannot be responsible for unsolicited materials. Send queries to DOG FANCY, Queries, P.O. Box 6050, Mission Viejo, CA 92690.

PAYMENT FOR ARTICLES
DOG FANCY pays on publication. Price varies according to quality and length of article, and number and quality of author-supplied photographs. We buy First North American Serial Rights on exclusive basis; the non-exclusive right to use the article in electronic media; and the non-exclusive right to use the article, as well as your name, image and biographical data, in advertising and promotion. We are entitled to make use of the article for the duration of the copyright and throughout the world.

Summary
DogGone is a bimonthly newsletter about fun places to go and cool stuff to do with your dog. The editorial focus is split between travel pieces and activity articles. Popular vacation spots, resorts, hotels, campgrounds and weekend getaways are profiled. Also highlighted are fun activities such as flyball, jogging with your dog, lure coursing and obedience trials. In short, it’s a travel and activity newsletter for dog owners.

DogGone readers range in age from young singles to families to retired seniors. All are dog owners, many with multiple dogs (up to 5 or 6!). Breeds range from miniature dachshunds to pit bulls to dogs with doubtful ancestry. Our own "roving reporter" is a beagle. DogGone readers are typically active folks who like to travel and wouldn’t dream of leaving the canine member of their family behind. Many are outdoor types, enjoying hiking, wilderness camping, roller blading and other activities, though some subscribers are physically impaired. Some readers prefer luxury accommodations, some are looking for moderate and budget lodgings and others RV it.

What We’re Looking For

DogGone is looking for lively, entertaining, intelligently written pieces on travel and dogs-allowed activities. A sampling of travel features includes resort destinations, bed & breakfasts, camping, and air travel tips – all written from a dog angle. Activities features can be dog sports, like agility, or people activities to enjoy with your dog, like roller blading or antiquing.

For travel pieces, resorts and inns which are especially dog-friendly (perhaps even offering a Pampered Pooch Package) warrant a profile. Other accommodations that welcome dogs can be can be incorporated into a theme article (i.e., fall foliage destinations, ski resorts or suite hotels).

For destination articles (such as "Boston With Terrier" or "Viszlas in Vegas"), it’s important to find fun activities in the area for owners to take their pets – nearby parks, hiking trails, pet-friendly tourist attractions, yearly festivals where dogs are allowed, gardens or zoos that permit pets, things of this nature. Our readers aren’t bringing their dogs on vacation just to leave them in a hotel room! Destination features should include lodging recommendations. Lodgings should allow any size pets, although particularly nice accommodations with "small pets only" rules may be part of a longer list. Contact phone numbers and addresses should be included, along with rates, number of dogs permitted in room and any pet fees or deposits.

Combination travel/activity articles include themes such as dogs-allowed beaches in the U.S., pet-friendly hiking trails, cross-country ski trails that permit dogs, etc.

Transportation articles could include international travel documentation requirements, railroads which permit pets, rating the airlines on their treatment of pet passengers, sailboat or houseboat travel with your dog, etc.

Activity features will introduce readers to new hobbies to enjoy with their pooch. Dog-related sports such as agility, field trials, skijoring, obedience trials and pet therapy are possibilities. How to include your dog in your present spare-time activities, such as backpacking, rockhounding cross-country skiing or birdwatching, are of interest.

Short submissions are accepted for DogGone’s regular departments: "Beyond Fetch" offers creative suggestions for games to play with your pooch and "Parks Department" features pet-friendly national, state, regional or local parks, forests and recreation areas. Photos welcome.

Style
Upbeat, humorous and easy-to-read are the main criteria for DogGone’s style. AP style is loosely adhered to, however, we prefer articles to sound colloquial. Therefore, a sentence does not necessarily have to be "complete" in a conversational style article.

Addresses and phone numbers of destinations and accommodations can be included in the text, if possible, or can appear as a sidebar or blurb at the end of an article. All information should be fact-checked personally; chamber of commerce and other published info is often outdated. For activity articles, it is important to include contacts for further information, as we will only be able to introduce readers to the sports.

Articles can be anywhere from 300 to 900 words. An approximate word count will be agreed upon at acceptance so we plan the rest of the newsletter accordingly.

Articles may be submitted on diskette (3.5" preferred) in word processing (text only) or ASCII format. Scannable hard copy is acceptable. Manuscripts may also be accepted via e-mail at "doggonenl@aol.com" with photos sent via USPS.

Artwork
Destination articles MUST include photographs. Location photographs of guests with their dogs are preferred. Line art may be interspersed with photography, but cannot be the sole graphics for a destination feature. Color prints are preferred, but B&W prints or color slides are acceptable.

Activity articles may be accompanied by a photograph of a dog and owner participating in the featured activity. Line art is is acceptable as well. Or, our illustrator can provide graphics.

Pay Rate
Depends on article. No more than $100 per feature with photos supplied, with $34 the usual for a 300-word story and $67 for 600-900 words. A one-year DogGone subscription can be partial payment for the first published article. Two- to four-paragraph "tips" on pet-friendly places or events pay $15.

Queries
If you have an article you feel would fit into DogGone’s editorial format, submit a query or the actual article (include word count) in writing to: Wendy Ballard, Publisher, DogGone, PO Box 651155, Vero Beach, FL 32965-1155. Response time is usually 2-4 weeks.

Writer's Guidelines for I Love Cats

I am always interested in new ideas for I Love Cats and request that you either send a paragraph or two about your idea or the finished piece. It would be nice to not only have the printed copy, but also a 3-1/2 inch disk in a format compatible with Windows 95. No outlines, please.

I do not want poetry (as I seldom publish it) but I am interested in feature stories about cats and their owners, interesting or odd happenings with cats, tips for cat owners, health issues, nonfiction pieces, behavior problems, that sort of thing, Please do not send stories about cats that live outdoors.

I'm looking for a story--preferably with photos or drawings--that is 1,000 words, tops, ideally 500-700 words. I buy all rights, since we copyright all stories. You must also sign a consent form, which spells out all resale questions I pay between $40-$150. Payment is upon publication.

Nonfiction pieces can be longer and the price varies, but starts at $50. Color slides are always a plus as I am usually in need of color photos. Short fillers are also welcome and payment is $25.

I have quite a backlog at the moment and we go to press about four months ahead of the publication date. If your story is accepted today, the earliest publication date would be 1999, so please keep that in mind when submitting stories, especially seasonal ones.

Please do not send any stories that have been published in other cat magazines or competing animal publications.

I will return any unused manuscripts Please include a SASE with your submission and I do my best to report back in 1-2 months. I hope this answers all of your questions

Thank you for thinking of I Love Cats.

Sincerely,

All articles must be neatly typed, double-spaced with numbered pages. Include your name, address and phone number on the first page of the article. If you would like materials returned, include a S.A.S.E. NO U.S. POSTAGE PLEASE! International postage vouchers accepted. Word processed documents are welcome and can be submitted on 5 1/4, 3 1/2 inch disks or by e-mail - please mark clearly the type of computer system (IBM or Mac) and the word processor software used to create the file(s). Common file types are Word Perfect version 5.1 or later, Microsoft Word for DOS or Windows etc. E-mail files to pets@moorshead.com

Outlines:
Before going to all the trouble of putting together a finished article, it's a good idea to either call or send a one-page outline of the article you have in mind. Avoid spending a lot of time, effort and expense on a piece that may be similar to one we have already published, are just about to publish, or one we can't publish in any case.

Length:
500-1,500 words preferred; longer or shorter by special arrangement only.

Photographs:
Good color pictures (at least 3x5 or larger) or slides are preferred, and high-quality black & white prints with good contrast are also acceptable. Please do not send us your only copy of a photo or the original negatives. We try to be careful, but things can get misplaced!

Artwork:
Line drawings and other artwork are welcome when accompanied by articles, and may be used as space and quality permit.

Payment:
Payment is generally made within 30 days of publication. If an article is accepted, Moorshead Magazines reserves all rights. Permission will be required (and almost always granted) if you wish to re-publish an article we have purchased from you. Please put requests in writing.
Pets Magazine will, on occasion, purchase articles for republication, however our normal rates do not apply, and are typically about half the regular rate.
Flat rates are paid at the discretion of the editor. Higher rates generally apply to in-depth articles requiring more expertise or research.
As a guideline, Pets Magazine usually pays the equivalent of 12-18 cents/word (Canadian funds).

Publication:
Due to space limitations, seasonal considerations and other editorial priorities, we cannot guarantee when any particular article will be published (and thus paid for). If you can sell the article somewhere else (and thus get published sooner), please let us know. We do understand that writers want to be paid as soon as possible!

Guidelines for Writers and Photographers

Welcome to Pets Quarterly Magazine, Canada's largest national magazine of pet health, care and nutrition.

Our editorial objective is to educate, inform and entertain the reader.

PQM is a consumer-level, mass-market print media vehicle written far the ordinary but focused reader. The prose style reflects the marketplace. The use of the vernacular is imperative. Writers should choose the first person selectively.

PQM is not a scientific or technical journal however any Latin terminology should be in italics with the common name following in brackets.

Writers should submit a prospective story outline to the Editor for approval. Stories and outlines should be submitted "hard copy" only. Please do not submit electronic media. The average response time to story outlines is 30 days.

For photographs, 3 1/2 X 5" colour prints are the standard for features. Images should be of excellent quality - clear and in focus with good contrast and excellent composition. Covers should be larger, preferably 8 X 10" colour or black and white.

The Editor is not responsible for lost or misplaced materials so do not send originals. Write captions and your name on the back of all photos. Include a "self-addressed stamped envelope" for the return of your material.

PQM pays competitive rates far editorial materials. Financial compensation will be discussed upon acceptance of material, both visual and written.

Thank-you for requesting our guidelines. We are always looking for interesting, innovative and informative materials for inclusion into our publication.

Sincerely,

Richard Soren
Managing Editor

Types of editorial material accepted by Miniature Donkey Talk for
publication:

1. Breeder profiles – either of yourself or another breeder.   The full

involved in organizing.
3. Detailed or specific instructional or training material.  We’re always
interested in people’s training methods.

specifically with donkeys, however, we will consider articles specifically
geared towards horses. If at all possible, substitute the word ‘horse’ for
donkey. We reserve the right to edit, change, delete or add to health
articles as we deem appropriate.  Please be very careful in the accuracy
of advice or treatment and review the material with a veterinarian.
5. Farm management articles.
6. Fictional stories on donkeys.

donkey, mule, or exotic magazines or organizations.
4. Book reviews.
