| HEALTH 301 Howard St., 18th Floor San Francisco, CA 94105 (415)512-9100 |
| Healths focus is not on illness,
but rather on ideas, events, and people. Our stories are
written to inform decisions and compel action in
effect, giving readers more control over their own
health. Each issue of the magazine presents some of the
most important developments that health specialists are
following in their journals, but in readable stories
written with warmth, wit, and authority. For our readers, health is a topic as varied as people are, with unexpected connections to all sorts of concerns and curiosities. Our stories must not only inform readers but surprise and entertain them as well. We scan the nation's newspapers for notable events that exemplify larger trends or concerns. And in considering story proposals, we look especially for well-articulated ideas that have the same kind of narrow focus and broad appeal. The audience for HEALTH is predominantly college-educated women who, by reason of their intellectual curiosity or practical interest, want both a dependable source of useful health information and a perspective on the rapidly changing face of American health care. HEALTH is published seven times a year, with a nationwide circulation of approximately 900,000. The magazine relies heavily on staff writers and contributing editors. We buy 30 to 35 freelance manuscripts including long features and short departments each year. We usually assign features to regular contributors or to experienced writers whose work we know and only after extensive discussion. Departments are more open to freelance writers new to us. Practical, service-oriented ideas are more likely to receive consideration. First-time contributors should propose stories for our Food, Relationships, Great Escapes, Mind, Smart Buys, Remedies, Vanities, and Fitness departments. (Vital Signs, Body Work, and Healthy Cooking are closed to freelancers.) Departments usually run about 1,200 words and the standard fee is $1,800. Fees are paid on acceptance. We pay research and travel expenses that have been agreed upon with the assigning editor. In all cases, accepted stories are returned to the writer for revision after editorial review. HOW TO QUERY All writers must submit written proposals before sending manuscripts, regardless of the planned length or nature of the story. Proposals should be no more than one or two double-spaced pages in length, sharply focused, with the style and sources clearly defined. Send proposals, along with a #10 self-addressed stamped envelope, resume, and copies of no more than two published stories, to: Paula Motte, Editorial Assistant HEALTH magazine Two Embarcadero Center Suite 600 San Francisco, CA 94111 We'll try to reply within two months. |

| Thank you for your interest in writing
to HEART & SOUL. As the African-American woman's
guide to healthy living, we strive to publish articles
that are positive, practical, personal, and passionate,
the "Four P's" that are trademarks of all
Rodale Press magazines. And, as the title HEART &
SOUL implies, our magazine promotes wellness of mind as
well as body. Articles with a "you can do it"
message from the top experts in medicine, health,
psychology, and fitness empower the reader toward
prevention, healing, and looking and feeling her best.
"Disease of the month" stories, and other
stories that dwell on sickness and disease, have no place
in our pages. HEART & SOUL does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. Please outline your story idea in a detailed query letter (one or two pages) that has the same "feel" that your article would. Give us specifics on whom you would interview and which research sources you might refer to. It's especially important to us that information come from the most reliable sources possible (for example, the chief of a certain specialty at a top teaching hospital, or a peer-reviewed medical journal) because we focus on vital health issues. Explain what conclusion the story might reach and what how-tos or tips you'd provide the reader. To submit more than one idea to us, please compose a separate query for each topic. Before sending a story idea to HEART & SOUL, please familiarize yourself with our regular departments, so that you can first determine where your idea might fit in the book. Is it a "Body Shaping" story? A profile for the "Champions" column? Feature stories typically cover relationships, self-esteem, fitness, celebrity weight-loss and exercise, and of course, hard health. Currently, we are most interested in receiving submissions for these sections: My Body, Interactive Sisterhood, Body, Mind, Sporting Page, Eating Right, Weight Loss, and relationship features. HEART & SOUL does not accept fiction, poetry, or book reviews. If you're proposing a seasonal or time-sensitive idea, keep in mind our long lead time generally six to eight months. Your letter should include your name, address and daytime phone number. A brief bio or resume that describes your writing experience is helpful, and clips are appreciated. We cannot respond to fax or phone queries, or any other queries unaccompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Please retain a copy of your query and allow approximately four to six weeks for review. Send your submissions to: Articles Editor, HEART & SOUL Magazine, 733 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017. We look forward to hearing from you. The Editors |
