ACCENT on Living

Email Address:
acntlvng@aol.com
Editor: Betty Garee
Critiques rejected manuscripts: Occasionally
Rights: Buys one-time rights unless otherwise specified.
Looking for: Non-Fiction:

PHOTOS: Can use black and white or color. Need clear prints with captions. Rate of pay - $5 and up. $50 and up for cover (color) photo. Amount will depend on quality of photos and subject matter. Paid upon publication.
CARTOONS: Interested in humorous incidents encountered by physically disabled individuals in everyday living. A person in a wheelchair is typical and should be depicted in humorous but normal situations. Rate of pay - $20 per cartoon paid upon acceptance.
Length requirements: Short, tightly written. 250 to 1,000 words, typed double-spaced. May be submitted on hard copy or via 3.5" floppy disk using DOS text, WordPerfect or QuarkXpress formats.
Payment: Ten cents a word and up, paid upon publication. Length of article, after editing and condensing, as it appears in the magazine will determine the payment for an article.
Comments: ACCENT readers prefer an informal, rather than an academic approach. We want to show individuals with disabilities getting involved in all aspects of life. Effective organization of ideas is important. The successful writer must be willing to cut, polish, check, rewrite and condense. An important element of most articles is good photos or illustrations.
Before preparing material for ACCENT you might like to inquire about interest in the subject. However, an expression of interest on our part does not constitute an assignment or a guarantee that the article will be purchased. Each submission will be accepted or rejected on its merits and editorial value to ACCENT. When ACCENT gives a definite assignment to a free-lancer, the terms will be clearly stated in writing.
Sample Copies: We will send a sample copy for $3.50.
How To Submit: May be submitted on hard copy or via 3.5" floppy disk using DOS text, WordPerfect or QuarkXpress formats.

Rights: Author will maintain copyright, but grants American Folk permission to republish the material in other forms (ie, print, cd rom, etc.) as part of an anthology or collection.
Looking for:
Nonfiction:: In America we nurture an ideal of neighborliness that rarely comes to the fore. When you move onto this perplexing street, American Folk is the lemon pie from the woman next door. It is a taste and peek into what is best, funniest, and most touching about the diverse people who live here. It is the extraordinary in the everyday and the mundane in the unfathomable. We are looking for articles that highlight some aspect of folklore and/or popular culture through a profile of an individual. For an example, go to our site and click on "features."
Length requirements: 500-750 words
Size of website: 10+ pages
Payment: Ten dollars per article, payment upon publication
Comments: Writers should have a general understanding of what we mean by folklore (traditional expressive forms manifested largely through firsthand interaction) and popular culture (expressive forms disseminated widely throughout society). Articles illuminate some aspect of the above topic(s) through a profile of an individual. Examples: A profile of a person who designs and wears Star Trek costumes as part of the fandom experience or a person who works as a body piercing apprentice.

Century

URL: http://www.supranet.com/century/
Email Address: robkill@aol.com
Editor: Robert K. J. Killheffer
Rights: Century pays 4 to 6 cents per word for First World English and non-exclusive reprint rights
Looking for: Century is a fiction magazine accepting stories from a broad spectrum of styles, subjects, and lengths (anywhere from 1,000 to 20,000 words). Our only across-the-board restrictions are that stories have some speculative or fantastic element, something that distinguishes them from purely mainstream, "slice-of-life" stories, and we want them to be accessible to all readers, not dependent on in-depth knowledge of a particular genre or literary tradition (this includes stories that introduce any specialized jargon that is not easily deciphered from its context). Beyond that, we're looking for accomplished writing with polished prose, sharp detail and observation, and some depth beyond the surface level of the text. We are not looking for poetry at this time
Payment: Century pays 4 to 6 cents per word for First World English and non-exclusive reprint rights
How To Submit: All stories should be typed, double-spaced, and printed on only one side of the page. If you are using a dot-matrix printer, be sure to separate the pages. We do not accept simultaneous submissions, and we do not recommend multiple submissions (that is, submissions of several pieces at one time). Author's name and address should appear in the upper right-hand corner of the first page, and the approximate word count in the upper left; in addition, every page should include your name, the title (or a recognizable abbreviation thereof), and a page number, in case pages become separated from the manuscript.

All submissions should be sent to the Editor, Robert K. J. Killheffer, at P.O. Box 150510, Brooklyn, NY 11215-0510, and should be accompanied by an appropriately sized self-addressed stamped envelope. If your manuscript is disposable, please send a number ten SASE for our response. If you do not live in the United States and can not acquire U.S. stamps, please enclose the appropriate International Return Coupons. Manuscripts without SASEs will not be returned.
