Mind's Eye Fiction

Email Address: MindsEye@tale.com
Editors: Ken Jenks & Elizabeth Leslie
Writer's Guidelines
Critiques rejected manuscripts: Rarely
Looking for:Fiction only - Adventure, Fantasy, Horror, Humor, Literar, Mystery, Romance, SciFi, Sports and Western
PLEASE read the guidelines before submitting.
Length requirements: 1500-40,000 words
Size of website: 400 Pages
Payment & Comments: Mind's Eye Fiction provides high quality fiction on the Internet. We do this by providing a financial incentive for professional authors and editors to participate in the Internet, while keeping the cost and inconvenience to our readers as low as possible. Our mission is to improve the quality of fiction available on the Internet.
The overall quality of fiction on the Internet is very poor. One of the reasons for this is lack of adequate payment mechanisms for work performed. Relatively recently, on-line monetary transaction systems with adequately low transaction fees have been developed. These systems allow authors to charge low unit prices for their on-line work, but to maintain enough of a profit margin to provide a financial incentive to publish in this new and growing medium.
Mind's Eye Fiction requires editorial review of all pieces of fiction before they are placed on the Internet. This review provides you, the reader, some level of assurance that you will find a higher quality of fiction here than, say, in one of the round-robin USENET newsgroups. Our reputation is based on the quality of the work seen by you, the readers. If we publish bad fiction, we'll get a just reputation for bad fiction.
Our editorial staff works either on a commission basis or on an up-front fee basis. Authors are paid by check. If you have a story you'd like to submit to Mind's Eye Fiction, please review our submission guidelines then send it to mindseye@tale.com

We like to use one urban ghetto story per issue. i.e. THE COLLECTORS, ON HIS OWN,GEEZERS.)We don't get enough of these. We love humorous mysteries. Mystery Buff Magazine

URL: http://www.mysterybuff.com
Email Address: publisher@mysterybuff.com
Editors: Felita Daniels, Loreen Arnac
Writer's Guidelines
Critiques rejected manuscripts: Occasionally
Rights: One time rights for the *paid* articles. We do have a short story contest that has different rights- see the web site.
Looking for: Comics, Jokes and Mystery Fiction. No explicit sex or gore.
Nonfiction: Author interviews, profiles and essays related to the mystery field. We have a "real life" private investigator column. We would also like to look at reporter-like features about mystery events and trip/cruises themed around mystery (for example, a report on Bouchercon or a staged mystery dinner theater for charity in your home town). We would like to see anything that would be of interest to mystery fans. We like to have variety in our issues (something for the hardboiled as well as cozy fan).
Length requirements: Up to 5,000 words
Size of website: 8 pages
Payment: At present, payment is $30-50 depending upon length and detailed research involved. Author also receives a complimentary copy of the magazine. Book reviews are 400-600 words. Book reviews do not receive payment at this time. They do however, receive the book (usually hardback) we send them for free & a complimentary copy of the magazine. Short story contest winners receive a percentage of the entry fees (1st= 20%, 2nd= 10%, and 3rd = 5%) and 15% of the entry fees go to charity.
Comments: FICTION: We publish the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of the short story contest and usually one other fiction piece per issue. So the math is that if your work is fiction it has a better shot getting published through the short story contest. The short story contest entry fee is only $5. See the website for full short story contest guidelines. Tips: Write a story you'd like to read. We tend to like stories that move along at a good pace and that have pro-active characters. By that I mean, they don't just bumble through things. They cause things to happen or they actively investigate things. We like strong beginnings. I'm not interested in what colors the clouds look like in the first sentence of a story unless it has something to do with the action of the story. P.S. We don't care if you've ever been published before. NON-FICTION: We usually have two author interviews per issue, a Mystery Bookstore Profile, one "news" type piece about something in the industry, and two other features. You may query us by email about your story idea. We want variety of types of articles and sub-genre.
How To Submit: We prefer and nice printed copy. If accepted we like to have them send us the work pasted into an email message for saving time in the typesetting process. We will accept submissions via email as long as they are NOT encrypted or misc. attached files. Email submissions should have a cover letter type introduction to them. Don't just send a story and we have to figure out if it's a submission for the short story contest or a freelance fiction piece. We do allow simultaneous submissions, but please indicate so on your manuscript and give us an e-mail address or phone number so that we can verify quickly if it's still on the market. Since we're monthly, we have to move quickly.

Now & Then

URL: http://cass.etsu-tn.edu/cass/index.htm
Email Address: woodsidj@etsu-tn.edu
Editor: Jane Harris Woodside
Writer's Guidelines
Critiques rejected manuscripts: Rarely
Rights: We hold all rights. We do this primarily because it relieves us of the chore of having to track down the author every time a professor wants to xerox an article for classroom use. We make it a practice to grant authors permission to reprint their own work promptly, and we never grant another publication permission to reprint without contacting the author first.
Looking for: Fiction: Literary and Humor. Issues have different themes.
Each issue of Now & Then focuses on one aspect of life in the Appalachian region (anywhere hilly from Northern Mississippi on up to the Southern Tier of New York). Therefore, we're interested in reviewing any fiction or articles, that (1) relate to a specific upcoming theme -- and see our writers' guidelines for upcoming themes -- and (2) is written about the region, by someone from the region, or by someone currently living in the region.
- Nonfiction: Again, Each issue of Now & Then focuses on one aspect of life in the Appalachian region (anywhere hilly from Northern Mississippi on up to the Southern Tier of New York). Therefore, we're interested in reviewing any articles, interviews, essays, memoirs, or reviews that (1) relate to a specific upcoming theme -- and see our writers' guidelines for upcoming themes -- and (2) is written about the region, by someone from the region, or by someone currently living in the region.
We cover the entire Appalachian region, 13 states running down along the mountain chain from the Southern Tier of New York State to Northern Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the northwest corner of South Carolina. If a submission isn't about the region and doesn't fit the theme, we will have to reject it, no matter how superb it is.
Length requirements: No Now & Then articles exceed 3,000 words.
Size of website: pages
Payment: We pay $15 per typeset page, so that most payments run anywhere from $15 to $75. We pay $10 per review (plus the reviewer gets to keep the book, obviously), and we pay $10 per poem.
Comments: Make sure you've read the writers' guidelines. It wouldn't hurt to order a sample copy ($5.00) from CASS/ETSU, Box 70556, Johnson City TN 37614-0556 or to find a copy at your local library and become familiar with the idiosyncracies of the magazine.
How To Submit: Send proposals and submissions to e-mail to woodsidj@etsu-tn.edu, mail to Jane Woodside, Now & Then, CASS/ETSU, Box 70556, Johnson City TN 37614-0556, or fax to 423-439-6340. I love e-mail submissions. Don't send discs.
