TALEBONES

URL: http://www.nventure.com/talebones
Email Address: talebones@nventure.com
Editors: Patrick & Honna Swenson
Writer's Guidelines
Critiques rejected manuscripts: Occasionally
Rights: First North American Serial Rights
Looking for: Fiction and Poetry. SciFi and Dark Fantasy (rather than straight extreme horror)
Length requirements: Maximum 5,000 words. Query for longer
Size of website:35 pages
Payment: Fiction: one cent a word
Poetry: one cent a word, 5 cents a line, minimum $5, maximum $10
Art: $40 cover, $10 -15 interior
Comments: The TALEBONES subtitle is "Fiction on the Dark Edge." Good strong stories with three dimensional characters are a must, but with a "dark" slant. What do we mean by dark? One interpretation might be: dark fantasy as opposed to horror...meaningful science fiction as opposed to hard science stories without heart. Pyschological. Experimental. Black humor. Something with punch that leaves us thinking, but keeps us entertained. Just send your best stuff. If a story really hits us, We'll publish it without hesitation, regardless of guidelines. As a general rule, we don't buy vampire fiction, straight slash/hack horror, deal with the devil, revenge, cat, or writer stories

Poems should be dark, moody, and evoke a strong emotional response in the reader. Again, no straight horror, blood and gore
How To Submit: We accept submissions in three manners: in hardcopy by postal mail, on disk by postal mail, and through email as an attachment. Specific requirements apply to each method. (Note: all art/photo submissions should be sent in hardcopy by postal mail until further notice.)

Hardcopy Postal Submissions
Refer to "Submission Format" above for further details. Include an SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelop) of manuscript size with sufficient attached USA postage or equivalent IRCs to return the manuscript. Don't guess! Take it to the post office to be weighed and purchase accurate postage. Do not send submissions by registered or certified mail. Alternatively you may use a #10 envelope SASE for our response only and mark your submission as "disposable," indicating the same in your cover letter. Hardcopy postal submissions with improper or missing SASEs will not receive a response.

On-Disk Postal Submissions
Your submission must be sent on a a 3.5 inch PC/DOS-environment compatible disk/diskette. Your manuscript should be saved twice on the disk: once as a plain text ASCII file and once in one of the approved formats: MS Works, MS Word, Wordperfect, Windows Write or RTF (Rich Text Format). The last of these formats, RTF, is by far the most common cross-application word processor formats. If you cannot save your manuscript in one of these formats, then save it twice in ASCII format (ie, STORY-1.TXT, STORY-2.TXT). Use a postal service approved disk mailer that is resealable. Instead of including an SASE, include a label with your address and sufficient postage for return of the disk in the same mailer. Alternatively you may use a #10 envelope SASE for our response only and mark your submission as "disposable," indicating the same in your cover letter. Hardcopy postal submissions with improper or missing SASEs will not receive a response.

E-mail Attachment Submissions
Attach your submission in TEXT-ONLY format to an email to be sent to talebones@nventure.com. Use the body of your email letter for your cover letter. If you have difficulty with attachments to email, you can place you sumission in the body of the email following your cover letter. In the subject line put "SUBMISSION". Response to email submissions will be by email in return.

Postal submissions should be mailed to the magazine's physical address at
